The journey of the Lefty Loosey began in 2023. A dear friend of our family—who was 90 years old at the time and remains a devout Pepsi drinker to this day—was losing the grip strength required to open her favorite beverage.
One day, she confessed to my grandfather that she was carrying a heavy pair of metal channel locks around her house just to crack open her sodas. Hearing this, my grandfather turned to me and asked if I could use my 3D printer to design something to help her out.
I got to work, focusing on a palm-sized design that would give her the leverage she needed without requiring her to squeeze tightly. The result was a total game-changer for her, and the original "Lefty Loosey" design was born.
From Open Source to a Growing Business
Because I wanted to help as many people as possible, I initially published the 3D model for free on Printables. To this day, that original design remains available for free download on Printables.com for anyone in the maker community who wants to print their own.
However, as time went on, I realized that not everyone has access to a 3D printer. Fast forward to 2026: while working to start my own business venture, I decided to go all-in on the Lefty Loosey. I went back to the drawing board to refine the design for broader production. By simplifying the geometry, I was able to minimize material usage and reduce print times—all without sacrificing the durability that makes it work so well.
This optimization means I can now produce these openers faster and get them into the hands of the people who need them most.
